Basics

What is ClimateCoating®?

ClimateCoating® is a product family of functional coatings for facades, roofs, interiors, wood, window connections, plaster and technical surfaces. In contrast to a normal paint, it is not just about appearance but, depending on the product, also about protection, moisture regulation, light reflection, heat protection, indoor climate or longer service life of surfaces.

Glossary

Is ClimateCoating® a paint or an insulation?

ClimateCoating® is a functional coating, not a classic insulation. Depending on the product, it can support building physics processes, for example through moisture regulation, reflection or surface protection. Whether additional insulation, plaster renovation or other structural measures are necessary depends on the building, substrate and the aim of the renovation.

What does reflective membrane technology mean?

Reflective membrane technology is how ClimateCoating® describes the physical principle of its coatings. After application, a coating layer is created which, depending on the product, can reflect radiation, regulate moisture or protect surfaces. Product selection, substrate, processing and application are decisive.

Glossary

What distinguishes a functional coating from normal paint?

Normal paint designs and protects a surface. A functional coating should also perform certain tasks. Depending on the product, these may include moisture regulation, light reflection, UV protection, weather protection, wood protection, protection of PU foam or reduced heating of roof and facade surfaces.

Can ClimateCoating® save energy?

Depending on the product and building situation, ClimateCoating® can help to achieve energy effects. In the case of roof and façade surfaces, the main issues are heating, radiation reflection, moisture behavior and heat input into the building. Generalized savings promises are not useful. The decisive factors are location, construction method, insulation standard, use, climate, substrate and design.

What is Calculus®?

Calculus® is the AI-based temperature calculator tool from ClimateCoating®. It is used to better classify possible differences in indoor temperatures and the resulting energy effects when walls or roofs are coated with ThermoProtect or ThermoActive. The tool does not replace an object inspection, but can provide an initial orientation.

When is ThermoProtect useful?

ThermoProtect is intended for façades where long-term weather protection, moisture regulation, UV resistance, value retention and improved thermal classification of the building envelope are important. Before application, the substrate, old paint, cracks, moisture load and processing should be checked.

When is History the right choice?

History is intended for historic or listed facades. Here, it is not just about a new surface, but also about preserving the substance, moisture behavior, diffusion openness and material-compatible renovation. In the case of listed buildings, specialist planning and monument authorities should be involved at an early stage.

When is ThermoActive useful?

ThermoActive is intended for roof surfaces where strong solar radiation, heating, UV exposure, weathering and protection of the roof structure play a role. This is particularly relevant for flat roofs, hall roofs, commercial roofs, public buildings and roof surfaces that are strongly exposed to the sun. Cool roof solutions reflect more sunlight and absorb less solar energy; however, the effect and benefits depend on the building, climate, roof structure and use.

When does ThermoPlus make sense?

ThermoPlus is intended for interiors where the indoor climate, wall surface and living comfort are to be improved. It is an interior coating, not a technical ventilation system, not a building damage restoration system and not a substitute for proper heating and ventilation. ThermoPlus is particularly useful where a high-quality interior wall coating with functional requirements is required.

When should you use Lumen?

Lumen is useful when the lighting effect, brightness and uniform room effect are the main focus. This applies, for example, to offices, showrooms, corridors, hotels, sales areas, stairwells or rooms with little daylight. Lumen does not replace professional lighting design, but can make better use of existing light.

When is ThermoVital useful?

ThermoVital is intended for indoor areas where moisture, hygiene and the risk of mold growth play a role. The sequence is important: first check the cause, then treat the infestation professionally, then select a suitable coating. The Federal Environment Agency points out that the cause of the moisture must be identified and eliminated, otherwise mould will return.

When is Nature the right choice?

Nature is intended for opaque wood protection in outdoor areas. Typical applications are wooden facades, window shutters, gates, balcony balustrades, fences, pergolas or other limited dimensionally stable and non-dimensionally stable wooden surfaces. Wood works, absorbs moisture and is exposed to sun, rain and temperature changes. A suitable wood coating must therefore be elastic, weather-resistant and suitable for the substrate.

Applications

Which coating is suitable for facades?

ThermoProtect is the central entry point for normal façades. History is an option for historical façades. If a render system is also required, IsoTex R70, IsoTex F50 and ThermoProtect may be relevant. It is always important to check the substrate, moisture load, cracks, old coating and desired function.

Which coating helps with mold issues?

In the case of mold, the cause must first be clarified. A coating must not replace an analysis of the cause. After suitable preparation and remediation, ThermoVital can help to reduce the risk of renewed mold growth on the surface. In the case of visible or recurring mold, an expert should check where the moisture is coming from.

Processing and planning

Can I apply ClimateCoating® myself?

This depends on the product, the surface and the substrate. Depending on the product, smaller, non-critical surfaces can also be treated yourself if technical data sheets and application instructions are observed. For facades, roofs, mold, historic buildings, industrial surfaces or critical substrates, a specialist company or technical advice should be consulted.

When do I need a primer?

A primer is useful if the substrate is absorbent, chalky, sandy, has different properties, is new or critical. It improves adhesion and evenness. Which primer is suitable depends on the substrate: FixPlus for many mineral substrates, NaturePrimer for wood, RustPrimer for ferrous metals and ZincPrimer for non-ferrous metals.

What must be checked before each coating?

Before any coating is applied, the substrate strength, cleanliness, moisture, old coating, cracks, absorbency, material compatibility and desired function should be checked. In the case of roofs, the roof structure, waterproofing, slope and water flow must also be checked. In the case of mold, the cause of the moisture must be clarified first. In the case of historic facades, the substance, salts and monument protection are also relevant.

How do you calculate the material requirements?

The amount of material required depends on the surface, substrate, absorbency, structure, product, number of coats and application. Rough or highly absorbent substrates require more material than smooth surfaces. The consumption values should always be compared with the technical data sheet of the respective product.

When is a coating not enough?

A coating is not enough if there is structural damage, leaks, active sources of moisture, defective roof waterproofing, loose plaster, unexplained mold infestation, severe cracks or structural defects. In this case, the cause must be rectified first. The coating can then be part of a sensible system.

Should you seek advice in advance?

Yes, especially for larger areas, roofs, facades, mold, industrial areas, historic buildings or unclear substrates. A consultation helps to realistically classify the product, substrate, application, expected benefits and limitations. This prevents false expectations and technical errors.

Target groups

What is important for homeowners?

Homeowners usually want to know which product is right for their specific problem: Protecting the façade, reducing roof heating, making interiors more pleasant, preserving wood or limiting the risk of mold. A clear initial classification helps: façade = ThermoProtect, roof = ThermoActive, interior = ThermoPlus, light = Lumen, moisture and mold issues = ThermoVital, wood = Nature.

Mold, moisture and health

Can you simply paint over mold?

No. Visible mold should not simply be painted over. The infestation, cause, surface, substrate and health risk must be assessed first. In the case of larger or recurring infestations, expert help is advisable. Coating is only the last step after clarification and preparation.

Why is it so important to clarify the cause of mold?

Mold is usually caused by moisture. This can come from the indoor air, condensation, thermal bridges, leaks, incorrect ventilation behavior or structural damage. If the cause is not eliminated, mold can reappear. A coating can therefore only be part of a sensible solution.
